Couple Arrested in Palavanthangal for Rs 1 Crore Real Estate Scam

The Economic Offences Wing of the Greater Chennai Police has arrested a couple who were absconding for ten years after allegedly defrauding a resident of Palavanthangal of about Rs 1 crore by promising high returns in real estate investments.

The accused have been identified as Dharani, 49, and his wife Rajalakshmi, 41.

According to the police, the complaint was lodged by James, 45, who resides in Palavanthangal. The complainant stated that his wife's school friend, Karpagam, introduced him to her sister Rajalakshmi.

Rajalakshmi and Dharani claimed to run a real estate business that generated substantial profits and convinced James and his wife to invest in the venture for high returns.

Believing their claims, James handed over approximately Rs 1 crore to the couple. However, after receiving the money, the couple absconded. James subsequently filed a formal complaint with the Greater Chennai Commissionerate.

The case was transferred to the Economic Offences Wing, where Inspector L. Sarojini conducted an investigation that led to the tracing and arrest of Dharani and Rajalakshmi.
