On Thursday, a police head constable on election security duty was stabbed and seriously injured at Polling Booth No. 324 at Jamaliya Middle School in Poraiyar, located within the Mayiladuthurai Assembly constituency. The violent incident occurred during the polling for the Tamil Nadu state election.

The injured policeman was identified as Vignesh, a head constable attached to the Kuthalam police station. Vignesh was deployed at the school to maintain security for the democratic process when the sudden attack took place.

According to police officials, a man approached Vignesh at the polling station and attacked him with a small knife. The assailant inflicted multiple serious stab wounds on the head constable’s neck and both of his hands before he could be stopped.

Following the attack, Vignesh was immediately rushed to the Government Hospital in Poraiyar for emergency medical attention. Doctors at the facility administered stitches to his wounds, and officials have since confirmed that his condition is stable.

The polling at Booth No. 324 had been proceeding at a brisk pace since voting commenced at 7 a.m. on Thursday morning. Election officials reported that the voter turnout at this specific booth stood at 36.65 percent by 11 a.m., around the time the situation unfolded.

The accused assailant was identified by authorities as Prabhakaran, a retired serviceman hailing from Kattucheri. A preliminary inquiry conducted by the police revealed that Prabhakaran allegedly bore resentment towards police personnel. Investigators noted that he had also been involved in a similar assault on another policeman a few years ago.
