Comedian Amruta Bendre to Bring Musical Standup Show Phulka Dots to Chennai

Standup comedian and former school teacher Amruta Bendre is bringing her solo musical comedy show, "Phulka Dots," to Chennai. The 41-year-old performer, who specializes in a unique genre she calls "Musical MOMedy," will present her signature blend of music, parody, and observational humor to local audiences.
The show's title, "Phulka Dots," is a play on the term "polka dots." Bendre developed the name from one of her early stand-up sets about the fashion industry's treatment of plus-size individuals. After the joke initially failed to receive laughs during an early performance, she decided to name her entire show after it.
Bendre transitioned into stand-up comedy after working as a school teacher for 20 years, teaching language, music, and theatre. She applies her classroom experience to her stage presence, noting that her personal reminder before performing is that she does not have to be funny, but simply has to hold a class for 60 minutes.
Her performance style heavily incorporates music. Bendre studied music for 15 years before stopping for another 15 years, eventually deciding to merge her musical training with comedy. She utilizes songs and parodies to connect with her audiences, believing that music strikes a chord with Indian listeners.
A significant portion of Bendre's audience comprises mothers, who she states make up 90 percent of her attendees. Her comedic material focuses honestly on themes of womanhood, including bodily changes, perimenopause, interactions with mothers-in-law, and the experiences of raising a teenage daughter.
This performance marks Bendre's return to Chennai, where she previously performed to a sold-out crowd. Despite her initial fears that local audiences might not favor Hindi comedy, the previous show was fully booked. She recalled a friend's comment that it felt insulting to laugh when someone was singing beautifully, which Bendre views as a fun challenge to bring out the laughter in her audience.
Bendre's comedy career began with online Zoom performances before she transitioned to live open mic events, starting with a quiet reception at a tiny bar in Bengaluru. Since then, her performances have evolved from forgetting her material to delivering successful shows.
