Co-optex Revamps Brand with 'Vetri Thari' Launch and Men's Segment Expansion

Co-optex, Tamil Nadu’s 90-year-old handloom cooperative, has launched a comprehensive brand makeover in Chennai to attract Gen Z and younger consumers, introducing a new retail concept called ‘Vetri Thari’ and expanding into men’s apparel, fast fashion, and quick-commerce digital platforms. The new ‘Vetri Thari’ retail outlet concept was recently launched by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay as part of the state government's efforts to modernize the legacy brand.

The cooperative, which was established in 1935 as the largest federation and leading handloom society in south India, is shifting its design strategy to change public perceptions and tap into new growth markets. According to officials, the brand is expanding beyond its traditional customer base to cater to evolving consumer preferences across Tamil Nadu and broader Indian markets.

Speaking on the design transition, T.N. Venkatesh, Principal Secretary of the Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles, and Khadi, noted that Co-optex is actively addressing the common perception that its products are primarily for women. He stated that the brand is introducing a wider range of products for men, including silk ties, designer dhothis, linen shirts, and kurtas.

In addition to menswear, the cooperative is incorporating traditional cultural motifs into contemporary designs tailored for younger shoppers. T.N. Venkatesh explained that Co-optex aims to weave elements deeply associated with Tamil Nadu directly into its fabrics. These design features will include motifs such as the iconic Thanjavur Thalayatti Bommai, the Kurinji flower, and the intricate patterns of Karuppur Kalamkari.

Highlighting the shift in consumer demand, J. Innocent Divya, Managing Director of Co-optex, emphasized that modern shoppers seek clothing for diverse occasions, prompting the handloom giant to move toward fast fashion. She noted that Co-optex must evolve with changing times while upholding its rich legacy, which led to the creation of the ‘Vetri Thari’ retail concept.

Under the new retail strategy, the department plans to open six ‘Vetri Thari’ stores every year over the next five years. Alongside its physical expansion, Co-optex is betting on the domestic home textiles market. While the cooperative currently exports its home textile line, it now plans to bring these products to consumers across the Indian market as well.

To reach younger demographics, Co-optex is also widening its digital footprint. While the legacy brand already sells its products through online e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart, it is now exploring quick-commerce platforms including Instamart and Blinkit. The cooperative plans to leverage consumer demand and real-time sales trends from these platforms to determine which future product lines to take forward.
