CMWSSB to Revamp Old Sewage Pumping Station in Korattur

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has launched preliminary work to revamp an old sewage pumping station located at Vivekananda Nagar in Korattur. CMWSSB Managing Director T. Anand inspected the municipal facility on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, to assess the progress of the upcoming upgrade, which will feature the installation of a dedicated odour control unit.

According to an official press release issued by the water board, the revamp of the Vivekananda Nagar sewage pumping station is scheduled to be executed and completed in about a month. The local facility, which has a sewage handling capacity of 3.5 million litres a day, is being upgraded as a public health measure. The introduction of the new odour control unit is expected to significantly improve the surrounding environment by controlling and mitigating the bad odours that come from the facility's daily sewage operations.

In addition to inspecting the Vivekananda Nagar site, Managing Director T. Anand reviewed the operations of the larger 42-mld Korattur sewage pumping station. The water board has automated this 42-mld facility using Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor and manage sewage flow more efficiently.

During his site visit, Anand met with regional staff and issued specific directives regarding operational safety. He instructed CMWSSB personnel to strictly ensure the use of safety equipment by all workers while carrying out maintenance, revamp, and operational activities at the sewage pumping station.

With preliminary work already in progress, the CMWSSB expects the entire revamp project at the 3.5-mld Vivekananda Nagar facility to be completed within the next month, bringing much-needed relief to residents living near the Korattur site.
