CMRL Builds Four-Level Metro Station at Koyambedu to Link Phase II and III Networks

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is constructing a new four-level Phase II station in Koyambedu, Chennai, to transform the existing transit point into a major interchange hub. The new facility will integrate the existing Phase I station with the upcoming Phase II and Phase III networks, significantly expanding connectivity for commuters in the area.
Koyambedu was among the first neighbourhoods connected to the Chennai Metro Rail system when train services launched on the 45-kilometre Phase I network between Koyambedu and Alandur in 2015. The upcoming upgrade aims to vastly improve transit options by linking the area to multiple new corridors.
Under the 118.9-kilometre Phase II network, Koyambedu will connect to Corridor 5, which runs from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. Additionally, a planned Phase III network extension will link Koyambedu to Pattabiram via Avadi.
The new four-level Phase II station is currently taking shape adjacent to the existing Phase I station. According to CMRL officials, the station will open to the public once the stretch of Corridor 5 from Koyambedu to the Chennai Trade Centre is completed.
T. Archunan, Director of Projects at CMRL, detailed the layout of the new five-storey structure. The street level will feature entry and exit points along with parking facilities. The first and second levels are reserved for property development, with plans to lease these spaces for retail, commercial, or co-working offices.
Ticketing facilities will be situated on the third level, and the train platforms will be built on the fourth level.
To ensure smooth passenger movement, the Phase I and Phase II stations will be integrated using pedestrian connecting bridges at the ticketing level.
Mr. Archunan stated that CMRL has already incorporated design provisions in the Phase II station to implement the Koyambedu-Avadi-Pattabiram corridor at the ticketing level. This will allow a similar bridge facility to connect the Phase II and Phase III stations.
Once completed, boarding and transiting through Koyambedu will become seamless, allowing residents and commuters to travel across the Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III networks.
