CM Vijay to Visit Families of 41 Karur Stampede Victims in July

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is scheduled to visit Karur during the second week of July to meet with the families of the 41 individuals who died in a stampede during a Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) rally.

The stampede, which took place on September 27, 2025, in Karur, is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and tragic events in the history of the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam. The loss of 41 lives during the political rally triggered widespread outrage across the state of Tamil Nadu. Opposing political leaders strongly criticized the organizers, citing a severe lack of adequate security measures at the rally venue.

In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Vijay, who was serving as the president of the TVK at the time of the incident, announced financial assistance for the grieving families. A sum of Rs 20 lakh was designated for each victim's family to provide financial support. According to reports, this compensation amount has already been successfully deposited directly into the bank accounts of the deceased victims' families.

Alongside the Chief Minister's planned visit, the legal and investigative proceedings surrounding the stampede have also seen recent developments. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the case to determine the causes and lapses that led to the stampede. Although the CBI probe was temporarily paused due to the Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the federal agency officially resumed its investigation on June 11.

As the investigation gains momentum, the CBI has issued formal summons to 10 individuals to join the inquiry. Furthermore, four police personnel have already appeared before the investigating agency to undergo questioning regarding the security arrangements and the circumstances surrounding the fatal stampede on September 27, 2025.
