CM Vijay Moves Assembly Resolution to Fix Lok Sabha Seats at 543

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay introduced a resolution in the Legislative Assembly in Chennai on Wednesday, urging the Central government to permanently fix the strength of the Lok Sabha at 543 seats.

Moving the resolution, Chief Minister Vijay advocated for the implementation of a 33 per cent reservation for women in the next Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be held in 2029. He stated in the resolution that the proposed quota must be calculated based on the current lower house strength of 543 seats.

Emphasising that the 33 per cent quota should not be delayed any longer, the Chief Minister asserted that reservation for women is not a concession, but their democratic right.

Addressing the issue of delimitation, Vijay stated in his resolution that it is the duty of the Centre to ensure that no state that has successfully implemented population control programmes is adversely affected by the delimitation proposal.

Following the introduction of the resolution by the Chief Minister, Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar invited MLAs to speak on the floor and clarify whether they supported or opposed the motion. During the discussion, MLAs belonging to the Left parties spoke in support of the resolution.
