CM Joseph Vijay Visits Saidapet Hostel Amid Rain To Hear Student Grievances

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay made a surprise inspection visit to the M C Rajah social justice students’ hostel in Saidapet on Friday to interact with residents and listen to their grievances, just as sudden rain showers hit Chennai. The downpour brought relief to the city by lowering the rising temperatures that had been broiling Chennai.
Accompanied by the State Minister for Backward Classes, V Sampath Kumar, the Chief Minister enquired about the facilities at the government-run hostel, which was recently renovated with a new 10-storey modern building. While many residents across the city were caught unprepared by the rain, the Chief Minister's inspection went ahead without a hitch as umbrellas were unfolded to take him inside the hostel building.
Once inside, the Chief Minister was welcomed by the students, who openly interacted with him and poured out their grievances. Among the issues raised was the alleged inhuman treatment of residents by some of the hostel staff.
The students also complained about the hostel's strict curfew hours. They explained to the Chief Minister that these restrictions impeded their preparation for competitive examinations, which require them to visit coaching classes and libraries at odd hours. Chief Minister Vijay listened to the students patiently and assured them that he would look into their grievances.
Outside the hostel, the sudden weather change threw normal life out of gear for many Chennai residents. Numerous commuters who were unprepared for the rain got soaked, with some two-wheeler riders forced to stop and take shelter under roadside canopies. The heavy rain also slowed down traffic in many parts of the city, and waterlogging forced people to trudge through inundated stretches on the roads.
Meteorological experts attributed the sudden change in weather to the formation of a trough. This trough extended from an upper air cyclonic circulation over Telangana to the Gulf of Mannar, passing across Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu less than a kilometer above mean sea level.
