CM C Joseph Vijay Flags Off 300 New Government Buses in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Thursday flagged off 300 new government buses in Chennai to boost public transport and suburban connectivity. The newly inducted fleet immediately commenced operations from key transit hubs, including the Kilambakkam and Koyambedu bus terminals, with the Chief Minister himself taking a promotional ride in one of the vehicles to Marina Beach. The launch is part of the state government's effort to enhance public transport infrastructure and the overall commuter experience.

The newly acquired fleet was procured at an estimated cost of Rs 127.21 crore. It comprises both city and mofussil buses. Specifically, the addition includes 164 diesel buses and 136 eco-friendly, low-emission CNG buses that are fully compliant with BS-VI norms. These vehicles are intended to strengthen urban and suburban connectivity, ensure seamless transit operations, and provide a safe and comfortable travel experience for the public.

According to an official release, the state's public transport network currently operates through 26 regions and 317 depots. A fleet of around 21,527 buses serves approximately 2.05 crore commuters on a daily basis. The release also noted that around 64 per cent of these daily passengers—which includes women, students, and persons with disabilities—avail of free travel concessions.

The rollout of these new buses follows a review meeting on the performance of the Transport Department, which was held under the chairmanship of Chief Chief Minister Vijay on June 17. During that meeting, directives were officially issued to transform the state's transport system into an eco-friendly, modern, and tech-driven network.

As part of this modernization drive, Chief Minister Vijay emphasized the implementation of several technological upgrades. These include smart card-based digital fare collection systems, GPS Vehicle Location Tracking systems, Passenger Information Systems, and the setup of 24x7 passenger help desks at major bus terminals.
