CM C. Joseph Vijay Avoids Press Conferences, Uses Visual Politics to Build Digital Reach

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has established a highly calculated, visual-first political communication strategy since assuming office, consistently avoiding traditional media press conferences while leveraging a powerful digital machinery. From driving government buses to drinking purified water during a visit to the Nemmeli desalination plant, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader has prioritized choreographed public imagery over direct press engagement to connect with the electorate.

Since launching the TVK, throughout his election campaign, and after assuming office as Chief Minister, Mr. Vijay has not held a single press conference. This silence extends to crises, such as when he chose to remain silent in the aftermath of a stampede at his rally in Karur last year.

Despite his media avoidance, Mr. Vijay is capable of sharp political discourse. When prepared to address the Assembly or public meetings, he delivers speeches peppered with colloquial words that appeal to his film fans while targeting political adversaries.

His communication relies heavily on a well-organized digital operation. The Chief Minister commands a massive online audience, with nearly 897,000 followers on his official TVK account on X, 2.3 million followers on his Chief Minister’s X account, and 4.1 million followers on Instagram. Any posts relating to him go viral within minutes, sparking intense debates between his supporters and opposition groups.

This rapid ascent to power is unprecedented in the history of the Dravidian movement. Unlike Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin and other predecessors who transitioned gradually from cinema to active politics, Mr. Vijay launched his party, campaigned, won the Assembly election, and became Chief Minister in an extraordinarily short span.

To maintain public attention, Mr. Vijay frequently engages in highly visual public acts. He has taken the wheel of health department vehicles, played chess with grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa, and briefly worked as a salesman at a ration shop during a public distribution launch. These carefully choreographed moments have allowed him to bypass traditional press releases and generate widespread public interest.
