CM Announces Rs 11,000-Crore Urban Infrastructure Push Across Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced an urban infrastructure package exceeding Rs 11,000 crore in the state Assembly, which includes civic works and sewerage projects covering Egmore and other parts of Chennai.

Making a series of announcements under Rule 110, the Chief Minister stated that the state government aims to prepare Tamil Nadu cities for rapid population growth and urbanisation. The comprehensive plan spans water supply, sewerage networks, roads, waste management, parks, and heritage conservation areas, focusing on addressing long-pending infrastructure gaps.

As part of the initiatives within the capital region, the government allocated Rs 236 crore for targeted sewerage projects in Egmore, Perambur, Kolathur, and Villivakkam. Additionally, Rs 410 crore will be invested to expand the Kilpauk Water Treatment Plant in Chennai.

The largest single project announced is a Rs 4,800-crore, 400 MLD desalination plant at Minjur, intended to secure drinking water for Minjur, Ponneri, Avadi, and North Chennai. Avadi will also see a dedicated Rs 500-crore initiative to provide round-the-clock drinking water supply.

Beyond Chennai, major infrastructure spending was allocated for various districts and local bodies. In Madurai, a four-decade-old underground sewerage network will undergo a Phase I revamp at an estimated cost of Rs 2,400 crore. Sewerage schemes worth Rs 960 crore will be implemented across Nagercoil, Kundrathur, and Nandivaram-Guduvanchery.

A further Rs 1,000 crore has been earmarked to upgrade drinking water infrastructure across Madurai, Cuddalore, nine municipalities, and 20 town panchayats. The state government will also invest Rs 300 crore to restore 33 combined water supply schemes across Tamil Nadu.

The Chief Minister noted during his address that the infrastructure push is designed to build cleaner, safer, and more sustainable urban centres across the state.
