CM Announces Olympic City in Chennai, Raises Sports Budget to Rs 1,051 Crore

CM Announces Olympic City in Chennai, Raises Sports Budget to Rs 1,051 Crore

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay recently announced that Chennai will house a dedicated Olympic city and that the state will soon establish a motor sports city equipped with world-class infrastructure. The major infrastructure drive is intended to advance the state into an international hub for athletics and foster sports tourism across the region.

The announcement comes alongside a steep rise in the state's budget allocation for youth welfare and sports development. Funding has nearly doubled from Rs 572 crore in the 2025–2026 financial year to Rs 1,051 crore in the 2026–2027 budget. The TVK government has identified sports promotion as a key measure to tackle rising drug abuse among youth, encapsulated in the Chief Minister's outreach slogan, "sports ah edu, drugs ah vidu" (start sports, stop drugs).

The state's initiative follows strong showings by Tamil Nadu competitors at the recently concluded Asian Games in Japan. Among the notable performers, athlete Vithya Ramaraj secured three medals at the 2026 Asian Games, crediting former sports minister Udayanidhi Stalin for prior improvements to the state's sporting landscape. Schemes such as the special scholarship for elite sportspersons have also supported athlete success on the international stage.

However, sports experts and enthusiasts in Tamil Nadu have highlighted several structural hurdles that must be addressed to translate budgetary gains into grassroots success. Issues include sports associations becoming entangled in litigation, inadequate local infrastructure, and poor nutritional support for athletes. Observers have noted an absence of dedicated physical education teachers at the primary school level and pending vacancies in higher classes, with some schools reassigning physical education periods to regular study hours.

To realise the vision for the Olympic city and motor sports city, proposals have been made for the government to form an expert committee comprising sports professionals, international athletes, lawyers, and policy strategists. Such measures are urged alongside increasing the existing 3 percent sports quota reservation for government employment, public sector undertakings, and higher education admissions, while navigating regulatory challenges under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.
