Class 12 Student Dies After Assault by Schoolmates in Tiruvottiyur

A 16-year-old Class 12 student of a government school died on Friday evening after he was allegedly attacked by a group of students from his own school at a vacant ground behind the campus in Tiruvottiyur.

The Thiruvottiyur police have detained a 16-year-old Class 11 student in connection with the incident. Investigators are also questioning more than 10 other students as part of the ongoing probe into the fatal assault.

According to the Thiruvottiyur police, the victim lived with his family in Tiruvottiyur. The boy had previously failed Class 10 and rejoined the school after clearing his examinations. Earlier in the week, the detained suspect had been involved in an argument with a close friend of the victim, who was another Class 12 student, over seniority at the school.

A preliminary inquiry by the police revealed that the victim's close friend was absent from school on Friday. Around 4:15 pm, following the conclusion of school hours, the suspect and his group cornered the victim on vacant land located behind the school premises. The group of more than 10 students then landed a series of blows on the teenager.

During the assault, the victim collapsed to the ground and began experiencing seizures. The group of attackers fled the area immediately after he collapsed. Hearing the commotion, passersby and commuters rushed to the vacant ground and found the boy lying unconscious.

The police were alerted to the scene, and the student was transported to the Government Stanley Hospital. Medical staff at the hospital declared him dead on arrival. Police officials stated that there were no visible external injuries found on the boy's body. The Thiruvottiyur police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
