Chromepet Teen Struck and Killed by Express Train Near Railway Station

An 18-year-old girl died on Monday morning after being struck by an express train while crossing railway tracks between the Chromepet and Pallavaram railway stations in Chennai. The deceased was identified by authorities as S Rajashri, a resident of Chromepet.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 7:30 am near Chromepet Railway Station. Rajashri was on her way to attend an orientation programme at a private college in Potheri, where she had recently joined as a student.

According to officers from the Tambaram Government Railway Police, there is a shortcut leading from Rajashri's residence to the nearest railway station that passes through a level crossing. Rajashri was walking through the closed level crossing when an express train heading to Egmore ran over her as she was crossing the tracks.

The gatekeeper stationed at the level crossing witnessed the accident firsthand. Following the collision, the gatekeeper immediately alerted the station master at Pallavaram, who then contacted the police to report the incident.

Responding to the report, the Tambaram Government Railway Police arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Police personnel recovered Rajashri's body from the tracks and arranged for it to be sent to a government hospital for a postmortem examination.

Based on the complaint filed regarding the incident, the Tambaram Government Railway Police registered an official case, and a detailed probe into the matter is currently under way.

Investigating officers stated that they are still working to ascertain the exact sequence of events that led to the student's death. Police explained that it remains unclear whether she failed to hear the approaching express train or if she was speaking on a mobile phone while crossing the railway line.

Rajashri's father had worked at a private company and had recently opted for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme.
