Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay conducted a surprise inspection at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Government Hospital for Women and Children in Egmore on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The visit was aimed at reviewing the medical services, facilities, and overall patient care provided at the historic healthcare institution.
During his walkthrough of the century-old institute, Chief Minister Vijay visited several areas, including the general ward and the intensive care unit. He interacted directly with the mothers undergoing treatment at the hospital to enquire about their health and recovery. The Chief Minister also sought direct feedback from the patients regarding the quality of medical treatment they were receiving and the standard of facilities available on-site. During his interaction in the wards, the Chief Minister held a few newborn infants in his arms.
The Chief Minister was accompanied during the inspection by the Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, K.G. Arunraj, and Health Secretary Darez Ahamed. Together, the officials reviewed the current state of medical services being provided to patients at the facility.
Following the inspection, Chief Minister Vijay directed officials to chalk out a comprehensive plan to develop the Egmore hospital into an integrated facility equipped with all necessary amenities to improve public healthcare delivery.
Addressing the media later, Health Minister Arunraj acknowledged that the government had received complaints regarding hospital staff demanding bribes from families to show them their newborn infants after delivery. He announced that the Chief Minister had issued strict instructions to dismiss any staff members found guilty of demanding bribes. The public has been advised to lodge complaints regarding such corrupt practices through the 104 round-the-clock health helpline.
