Chennai Travellers Embrace Monsoon Tourism with Surge in Rainy Season Bookings

Chennai travellers are increasingly abandoning traditional summer holiday plans to embark on "coolcations" and "flip climate tours" during the rainy season. Local holidaymakers are choosing to travel to active monsoon destinations to experience cooler weather, greener landscapes, and unique outdoor experiences.

According to travel companies, the monsoon months, which were once treated by operators as a lull period, are seeing a significant surge in interest from city residents. While local weekend favourites such as Kodaikanal and Yercaud continue to attract travellers, interest is rapidly growing in destinations across Karnataka and Kerala that offer mist-covered hills, waterfalls, and forest stays.

Bharat Varadarajan, a Chennai resident who works at a multinational corporation, recently traveled with his wife to the Cheeyappara waterfalls in the Idukki district of Kerala. "This time we wanted to enjoy monsoon in Kerala. My wife and I visited the Cheeyappara waterfalls in Idukki district. Petrichor is such a stress buster," Varadarajan said.

Other residents are planning trips further into the season. J Yohanan, 50, shared that he and his wife are planning an August trip to Madhya Pradesh to experience the monsoon there, after being inspired by a promotional post from the state's tourism department.

The trend is not limited to domestic travel. Tour operators report strong interest from Chennai residents in international destinations such as Japan, Vietnam, the Maldives, Mauritius, and Ladakh. Immersive nature-based holidays at national parks and reserves, including Bandipur, Mudumalai, and Periyar, are also drawing interest, alongside pilgrimage routes like the Char Dham and Kailash Mansarovar.

Rajeev Kale, president and country head of Leisure, Travel & MICE at Thomas Cook (India) Ltd, stated that travellers are increasingly seeking to explore destinations that offer unique experiences and natural beauty. Kale noted that destinations like Ladakh, Africa for the Great Migration, China, Vietnam, and Japan are witnessing strong interest from Chennai travellers for the upcoming monsoon season.

S D Nandakumar, president and country head of Holidays & Corporate Tours at SOTC Travel, added that improved connectivity and accessibility have played an important role in shaping these travel choices. During the monsoon months, Chennai travellers are displaying a strong preference for hill stations and coastal escapes that offer convenience, shorter travel durations, and the flexibility of quick getaways.
