Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj Warns Cops of Arrest for Taking Bribes

Chennai City Commissioner of Police A Amalraj has declared a war against bribery in the police department, issuing an open warning that police personnel found demanding or accepting bribes for doing their job will face criminal prosecution and arrest.

The warning was issued during a confidential meeting with police officers of the rank of assistant commissioner and above at the commissioner’s office in Chennai on Monday. Amalraj directed the senior officers to communicate the instructions to every police station in the city and ensure strict compliance.

Amalraj stated that those found guilty of demanding or accepting illegal gratification would be arrested under relevant anti-corruption laws. In addition to criminal proceedings, offending officers will also be subjected to departmental action.

During the meeting, the commissioner rejected feeble justifications that bribes are accepted to cover "station expenses." Amalraj clarified that the government already provides adequate funds to meet the day-to-day operational requirements of each police station.

Amalraj also sought suggestions from senior officers on methods to eliminate bribery at the police station level. While some attending officers recommended issuing stronger warnings, Amalraj stated that sufficient warnings had already been given and that legal action would now follow any proven violation.
