Chennai Paediatricians Report Early Surge in Schoolchildren Influenza Cases

Paediatricians across Chennai are reporting an unusually early seasonal surge of influenza cases among schoolchildren, with infections quickly spreading from classrooms to other family members.
Medical practitioners noted a substantial rise in cases during July and August, recording higher infection numbers compared to the previous year. The rapid spread has been largely attributed to prolonged close contact among students in school environments.
Dr Vasanthi Thiruvengadam, Head of the Department of Pediatric General Medicine at Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, stated that mild cases are generally not screened or tested for influenza, though the illness remains highly contagious. She noted that when one child in a classroom becomes infected, the virus spreads quickly to others.
Doctors have urged parents to watch for common symptoms, including fever, a running nose, malaise, and general respiratory discomfort. In cases where a child develops difficulty breathing, parents have been advised to monitor oxygen saturation levels closely.
Medical experts highlighted that certain groups face an increased risk of complications from the flu. These include infants under one year of age, as well as children with underlying medical conditions such as asthma, heart disease, or other chronic respiratory ailments.
To prevent severe illness and curb transmission, doctors recommend that parents consider annual flu vaccinations for their children. Medical guidelines advise that children up to nine years old may require two vaccine doses during their first year of inoculation, followed by a regular annual dose as directed by healthcare providers.
