Chennai NEET Aspirants Brace for Tougher Re-Exam After Paper Leak

On June 18, 2026, medical aspirants in Chennai neighborhoods including Ashok Nagar and Chetpet expressed anxiety over expectations of a highly difficult question paper for the upcoming NEET re-examination scheduled for Sunday, June 21, 2026. The re-test was ordered after the cancellation of the initial exam due to a question paper leak.
A total of 1,42,489 candidates from Tamil Nadu are expected to sit for the re-examination, representing the sixth-highest turnout in the country. However, local students are struggling with the mental transition of preparing for the test a second time.
Nidhi Nagarajan, a Chennai-based medical aspirant, noted that the biggest challenge has been tuning herself mentally from a relaxed state back into exam mode. She added that students are worried about falling behind since other academic courses have already closed their admissions before medical admissions have even begun.
The National Testing Agency has allotted an extra 15 minutes for the re-test, which students said has fueled rumours of an exceptionally tough question paper.
Another aspirant, Avani Tripathi, stated that students are anticipating a particularly difficult physics paper. However, she noted that the ban on the messaging app Telegram has boosted the confidence of the candidates.
Local schools in Ashok Nagar and Chetpet have reported a significant drop in the number of students attending coaching sessions for the re-exam compared to the initial test.
At the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, the number of students preparing for NEET dropped from 50 to 15. V Ezhilarasi, a teacher at the school, explained that many students chose to enroll in other courses instead.
Similarly, at MCC Higher Secondary School in Chetpet, the number of preparing students fell from 58 to 42. School headmaster G Jebadoss Thinakaran stated that many students who did not perform well in the first round opted for arts, science, or engineering streams. The school has been conducting revision tests to help the remaining students prepare.
