Chennai Metrowater to Complete ₹44.93-Crore Flow Meter Installation in Two Months

Chennai Metrowater is set to complete the installation of electromagnetic flow meters across all its water treatment and distribution facilities in the city within two months. The civic initiative is aimed at measuring the exact quantity of water distributed and assessing non-revenue water across urban supply networks.

As part of the project, Metrowater Managing Director T. Anand inspected the operational status of newly installed flow meters at several locations, including ward 157 in Manapakkam and the Ramakrishna Nagar water distribution station situated in Valasaravakkam.

Out of the 456 flow meters proposed under the project, nearly 372 units have already been fixed at strategic locations. These include the main pipeline routes conveying water to distribution stations as well as the receiving points of various water distribution stations across the city.

According to an official press release, the entire bulk metering project is being executed at a total cost of ₹44.93 crore. Once the installation is fully completed, the water supply agency will be equipped to identify water losses with precision, track consumption patterns, and monitor the drawing and distribution of water on a real-time basis.

Officials noted that real-time monitoring will help ensure that all neighbourhoods across Chennai receive an equitable supply of drinking water. The system will enable the utility to spot leakages, reduce unmetered losses, and streamline distribution management.

In addition to bulk metering at supply facilities, the installation of individual water meters has been made mandatory for all new water service connections. Metrowater stated that the cumulative data gathered through these metering systems will help assess wider distribution losses and support continuous improvements to the quality and reliability of drinking water services across the city.
