Chennai Metrowater Seizes 30 Illegal Pumps in Taramani to Restore Water Supply

Chennai Metrowater officials have seized 30 unauthorized submersible water pumps in Taramani over the last and current months to stop illegal water siphoning from the pipeline network. The enforcement action targeted several streets in the neighborhood, including Ramasamy Street, Anjugam Ammal Street, Rani Ammal Street, Bharathiar Street, Kattabomman Street, and Periyar Nagar, where residents at the tail end of the pipeline had been left with inadequate water supply.
The crackdown was initiated following repeated complaints from local residents who reported receiving little or no water, despite regular supply being pumped into the local network. A senior Metrowater official stated that 22 pumps were confiscated last month, and an additional eight pumps were seized during the current month.
During their inspections, officials discovered that violators had installed submersible pumps directly onto the pipelines. These pumps siphoned off large volumes of water upstream, which severely reduced the water pressure for residents located further down the line.
According to Metrowater officials, monitoring of the supply to these areas showed there were no physical blockages in the main lines. Subsequent inspections, particularly targeting commercial establishments, confirmed the illegal activity and led to the seizure of the motor pumps. The removal of these unauthorized pumps has now restored proper water supply and pressure to the tail-end residents.
Metrowater has announced strict financial penalties for the violators. Those using the illegal pumps for commercial purposes will be fined ₹10,000, while residential violators face a fine of ₹7,500. Officials warned that if the violators fail to pay the fine within a week, their water connections will be disconnected.
To prevent the reinstallation of these pumps, Chennai Metrowater plans to expand its enforcement drive across all 15 of its operational areas. The agency will conduct regular checks and has urged local residents to report any instances of illegal water tapping.
