Chennai Metro Records Over 1.04 Crore Passenger Journeys in August

Chennai Metro Rail recorded more than 1.04 crore passenger journeys across its network in August, with August 14 registering the highest single-day ridership of the month, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) announced on Tuesday.

A total of 1,04,04,098 passengers travelled on Metro trains between August 1 and August 31. On August 14, the transit network saw its peak daily passenger flow for the month, carrying 4,01,607 commuters in a single day.

The National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) Singara Chennai Card remained the most preferred ticketing mode among commuters, accounting for 52,84,196 journeys during the month.

Digital ticketing platforms also saw substantial usage throughout August. Bookings through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) accounted for 12,47,168 passenger journeys, followed by WhatsApp ticketing, which registered 4,69,198 passengers. The Chennai One App recorded 3,10,474 journeys, while Paytm and PhonePe accounted for 3,09,569 and 2,73,438 passengers, respectively.

Traditional paper-based options continued alongside digital methods. Single-journey paper QR tickets purchased at station counters accounted for 20,20,687 passenger journeys. Static QR tickets generated at Metro stations were used by 2,28,732 commuters. Additionally, online ticketing recorded 1,56,385 journeys, while 1,04,251 passengers travelled using the digital Store Value Pass on the CMRL Mobile App.

CMRL continues to offer a 20 per cent discount on journeys booked using the NCMC Card and digital QR-based platforms, which include WhatsApp, Paytm, PhonePe, and the Store Value Pass via the official mobile application. The discount does not apply to single-journey paper QR tickets purchased at physical ticket counters.
