Chennai Homeowners Encroach on Pavements With Private Ramps and Gardens

Homeowners in affluent Chennai neighbourhoods, including T Nagar, RA Puram, Boat Club Road, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar, and Thiruvanmiyur, are encroaching on public land to build private structures over pavements and roads. These extensions, which include ramps, staircases, and gardens, have significantly reduced pedestrian space and obstructed vehicular traffic.
On Vijayaraghava Road in T Nagar, private ramps have been constructed directly onto the pavement, eating into the road space. This practice has become a common sight across multiple high-end residential areas in the city, where house owners hijack public pathways to extend their properties.
In addition to structural encroachments, residents in these areas are also parking their vehicles on both sides of the carriageway. This further narrows the available space for passing traffic and makes walking along the streets increasingly difficult for pedestrians.
The issue has come to light as discussions around walkability and pedestrian-friendly streets gain momentum in Chennai. Unlike street vendors, who can be relocated by authorities to clear the streets, these permanent structures built by homeowners pose a more challenging and lasting obstruction to public spaces.
