Chennai doctors report rise in early cataract cases among diabetics in their 40s and 50s

Doctors in Chennai are reporting a significant rise in early-onset cataract cases among individuals in their 40s and 50s, with diabetes emerging as a major contributing factor. According to medical experts at Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, persistently high blood sugar levels can accelerate the clouding of the eye's natural lens. This physiological change leads to both an earlier onset and a faster progression of cataracts among patients.

The trend highlights a critical health concern across India, where the diabetic population is exceptionally high. A press release from Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital indicates that India has over 101 million adults living with diabetes, as well as another 136 million individuals with prediabetes.

Experts stated that besides diabetic retinopathy, cataracts are becoming a highly significant concern among people who have long-standing or poorly-controlled diabetes. The hospital emphasized that managing blood sugar levels is crucial, but regular monitoring of eye health is equally vital to prevent permanent damage.

Doctors have identified several key symptoms that patients should watch out for. These symptoms include blurred vision, glare, difficulty reading digital screens, and experiencing frequent changes in spectacle power. Experts cautioned that these signs should not be ignored, as they often indicate the onset of a cataract.

To combat this rise and prevent advanced vision loss, medical professionals are strongly advising people above the age of 40, particularly those with diabetes, to undergo regular eye examinations. They also advised that patients should not delay cataract surgery when it is deemed necessary by an eye specialist.

To raise awareness about the issue, Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital has announced a promotional awareness initiative. The hospital is offering up to 50 percent off on cataract eye evaluations for patients. This discount is currently available and will run until July 15, encouraging individuals to take proactive steps toward protecting their vision.
