Chennai Corporation schools enroll 25,840 new students as infrastructure improves

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has recorded a steady rise in student admissions for the 2026-27 academic year, enrolling 25,840 new students across its 417 schools in Chennai. The civic body attributed this growth to substantial upgrades in school infrastructure, enhanced learning facilities, and the successful implementation of various student welfare schemes.
With the latest round of admissions, the total student strength across all GCC-run educational institutions has now reached 1,11,567. The corporation’s expansive network of schools currently includes 206 primary schools, 130 middle schools, 46 high schools, and 35 higher secondary schools.
To accommodate and attract more students, the civic body has focused heavily on strengthening physical infrastructure. The GCC has constructed new school buildings and set up modern facilities such as smart classrooms, computer laboratories, and science laboratories. Classrooms have also been furnished with improved furniture to provide a more comfortable learning environment for the children.
In addition to academic spaces, the corporation has upgraded campus amenities to ensure a healthier environment. These improvements include the development of playgrounds, the provision of safe drinking water facilities, and the overhaul of upgraded sanitation systems across the schools.
A major driver of the enrollment increase has been the introduction of targeted student welfare initiatives. Among these is the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, which ensures students receive nutritious meals at the start of the school day. The GCC also provides snacks for students attending evening classes and offers incentives to encourage 100% school attendance.
To promote academic excellence and student engagement, the corporation has introduced special incentives for Class 10 and Class 12 toppers, alongside organizing educational tours and upgrading sports facilities. Furthermore, to ensure the safety of students and staff on campus, the GCC has installed CCTV surveillance systems across its school premises.
