Chengalpattu Launches AI Drone Pilot Project Vaan Vizhi for Public Safety

The Chengalpattu district administration and police have launched Project ‘Vaan Vizhi’, a pilot initiative deploying artificial intelligence-enabled autonomous drones to enhance public safety surveillance across the district.

The project relies on indigenous drone and AI technology to strengthen preventive policing through real-time aerial intelligence. The system is designed to detect and monitor incidents quickly, enabling police personnel to respond faster across critical areas.

According to officials, the primary objectives of the drone surveillance initiative include ensuring the safety of women and children, curbing anti-social activities, monitoring illegal liquor sales, easing traffic congestion, and managing crowds during major gatherings.

The drone network will be integrated with the 112 emergency control room, which will function as the central command unit. Once an incident is identified by the AI system, it can pinpoint the exact geographic location, issue real-time alerts, and help coordinate an on-ground police response within seconds.

Addressing the drone capabilities currently available with the Singappen Adhiradipadai (SSF), a senior police official stated that the drone project for the SSF will be taken up during the second phase of implementation. The pilot phase is being executed exclusively in Chengalpattu to test the operational viability of the system.

The effectiveness and operational outcomes of the pilot project will be evaluated by authorities before any further expansion to other regions or specialised units.
