CBI Team Reconstructs BSP Leader Armstrong Murder Scene in Perambur

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Saturday visited Venugopal Street in Perambur to inspect the crime scene and reconstruct the sequence of events surrounding the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader K Armstrong.

The visit occurred nearly a week after the central agency officially took over the investigation into the killing. A three-member CBI team led by DIG Raguramarajan surveyed the spot where the political leader was hacked to death outside an under-construction house, recording how the attack unfolded.

Inspector M Chiranjeevi, who served as the station house officer and the original investigating officer when the murder took place on July 5, 2024, was also present at the location alongside the CBI officials during the scene reconstruction.

The special task branch of the CBI in Chennai recently re-registered the first information report (FIR) originally lodged by the Sembium police. The initial case had been registered on the basis of a formal complaint submitted by Armstrong’s brother, Veeramani, who was an eyewitness to the fatal attack.

The CBI took charge of the case following legal proceedings in the higher judiciary. In September last year, the Madras High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation to the central agency and quashed the chargesheet previously filed by the city police.

Although the then Chennai police commissioner approached the Supreme Court to challenge the High Court's transfer order, the petition was subsequently dismissed as withdrawn. The apex court's decision cleared the way for the CBI to take over the probe and commence a fresh investigation into the case.
