Car Driver Arrested After Fatal Crash Kills Motorist on ECR Near Neelankarai

The fatal road accident on Monday night, July 6, 2026, on the East Coast Road (ECR) near Neelankarai, Chennai, resulted in the death of a 45-year-old motorist and left his wife injured. The incident, which occurred within the limits of the Adyar Traffic investigation police, led to the arrest of a 28-year-old car driver and prompted a protest by local residents who expressed concern over speeding vehicles in the area.

The deceased motorist was identified as K. Raju, a resident of Rajendra Nagar 5th cross street in Neelankarai. According to the Chennai City Traffic police, Raju and his wife, Devi, had gone to a medical shop located on the ECR on Monday night. The couple was returning home on their two-wheeler when the accident occurred.

A speeding car hit their two-wheeler. The car was driven S. Sasikumar, a 28-year-old resident of Ayanavaram. In the impact of the collision, Raju sustained a severe head injury and died on the spot.

The Adyar Traffic investigation police, upon being alerted about the accident, arrived at the spot. They sent Raju's body to the Government Royapettah Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Raju's wife, Devi, who was injured in the crash, was also admitted to the same Government Royapettah Hospital to receive medical treatment.

Following the fatal accident, a group of local residents took to the streets to stage a protest. The residents highlighted that several accidents have occurred on this stretch of the road due to speeding vehicles. They demanded the arrest of the driver and called for measures to address the speeding issue. The driver, S. Sasikumar, was subsequently arrested by the police.
