Cab Driver Escapes After Car Plunges Into Metro Construction Pit Near Nandanam

A 30-year-old cab driver survived a harrowing ordeal on Saturday night after his car plunged into a metro construction pit near the Nandanam metro station in Chennai. The driver, identified by police as Ibrahim of Tiruvottiyur, escaped the incident without sustaining any major injuries.

The accident occurred at a construction site for a road overbridge situated above the metro tunnel stretch that connects Nandanam with Saidapet. According to police reports, Ibrahim was driving along the stretch when another car approached his vehicle at a high rate of speed.

In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision with the oncoming vehicle, Ibrahim quickly swerved his car to the right. This sudden movement caused his cab to veer directly into a deep pit that had been excavated and barricaded for the ongoing metro rail works.

The vehicle crashed through the safety barricades erected around the site and was left hanging precariously over the edge of the construction pit.

Onlooking local residents immediately contacted the local police and emergency rescue services. Rescue personnel rushed to the scene and managed to safely extract Ibrahim from the dangling car.

Following the rescue, emergency workers deployed a crane to pull the car out of the pit. The recovery operation took approximately one hour to complete. The incident and the subsequent recovery efforts caused temporary traffic disruptions along the busy road stretch.

The Ashok Nagar Traffic Investigation Wing police have officially registered a case and initiated an investigation into the accident. Officers have collected CCTV footage from a nearby building to analyze the incident and verify the cause of the crash.
