BMW Chennai Factory Transforms Into Major Luxury Car Production Hub

CHENNAI — BMW’s manufacturing facility near Chennai has transformed from a small assembly operation into a central pillar of the company's Indian strategy, following its establishment nearly two decades ago.
In 2007, the German luxury automaker inaugurated its factory near Chennai with an initial investment of 20 million euros. At the time, the plant was set up with a modest outlook, featuring an annual production capacity of 2,000 vehicles.
When the facility was first launched, the market for luxury cars in India was extremely small, with industry-wide sales of only about 4,500 vehicles per year. The sector also faced steep import duties, and the prospect of meaningful localisation of car parts and assembly appeared to be far off.
However, Norbert Reithofer, who served as the chairman of BMW AG during the factory's inauguration, anticipated a different future. Reithofer predicted that the demand for luxury cars would double as the broader Indian automobile market expanded.
Nearly twenty years later, the automaker's early bet on the region has paid off. The Chennai facility has grown beyond its original small assembly limits to become a key production and workshop hub for BMW's luxury vehicles, marking a major shift in how the brand manufactures and distributes its cars in India.
