BIS Seizes 579 Plywood Sheets With Fake ISI Marks in Chennai Raid

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officials seized 579 plywood sheets bearing spurious ISI marks during a raid on a plywood shop and godown in Chennai on Tuesday.

According to an official press release, the shop and godown were found to be storing plywood bearing fake ISI marks alongside invalid BIS licence information. The operation was carried out after authorities identified violations of the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016, as well as mandatory Quality Control Orders.

The enforcement team seized a total of 579 plywood sheets of varying grades and sizes during the inspection.

S. D. Dayanand, Senior Director and Head of the BIS Chennai Branch Office, stated that these categories of plywood fall under mandatory BIS certification as outlined in the Plywood and Wooden Flush Door Shutters Quality Control Orders, 2024.

Officials added that BIS continuously conducts market surveillance and enforcement operations across the region to protect consumer interests and curb the circulation of substandard products.
