Ashwanth Valthapa and U Mukilesh Secure Major Bids at Chennai TNPL Auction

On Friday, the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) player auction was held at Sriraman Hall at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, featuring high-value bids for key players and the announcement of new ownership for two franchises ahead of the tournament starting later this month.

All-rounder Ashwanth Valthapa emerged as the highest buy of the day, secured by Chepauk Super Gillies for Rs 14.45 lakh. Valthapa, who plays for Swaraj CC in the TNCA first division league and trains at Coaching Beyond, credited his coaches B Arun and Jayakumar for supporting his development and helping him secure a place in the TNPL.

Another major acquisition was top-order batter and all-rounder U Mukilesh, who was bought by Nellai Royal Kings for Rs 13.7 lakh. Mukilesh expressed delight over his move to the Nellai franchise, stating that he felt no undue pressure regarding his price tag and intended to focus on playing his natural game.

The auction also marked ownership transitions for two teams. The Madurai Panthers, who last won the tournament in 2018, have been taken over by new owners based in the United States. Mahesh Subramaneyan, CEO of Madurai Panthers, expressed optimism for the season and highlighted player Kiran Karthikeyan as a strong prospect for the team.

The Kovai Kings also debuted under new ownership led by managing director Anantha Karthikeyan S. A former junior state player from Hyderabad, he emphasized continuity for the franchise and described the TNPL as an important platform for players aspiring to reach the IPL and the Indian national team.

Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) President TJ Srinivasaraj stated that the auction proceeded smoothly with intense bidding. He added that while two teams have new owners, the style of running the franchises will remain consistent.

Newly appointed Tamil Nadu senior men's team coach Yo Mahesh also attended the auction to scout talent. Mahesh noted that quality all-rounders were in high demand because they provide team balance, and stated he would monitor the tournament closely to identify promising young players from the city and districts.
