Anna Salai 3.2-km Elevated Corridor Reaches 70% Completion

Around 70% of the construction work on the 3.2-kilometre four-lane elevated corridor on Anna Salai, connecting Teynampet and Saidapet, has been completed, according to the state highways department. Authorities are currently working to finish the project by the end of November.
The elevated corridor is being constructed to ease vehicular movement across one of the busiest stretches in the city. By carrying traffic over heavily congested road intersections below, the project is expected to significantly shorten travel duration. Officials anticipate that the facility will reduce commuting time between Teynampet and Saidapet from approximately 30 minutes down to around five minutes, though actual time savings will depend on prevailing traffic conditions.
The project involves significant engineering constraints due to its alignment directly above Chennai's operational underground Metro line. Out of the total 3.2-kilometre length, a 2.4-kilometre stretch of the elevated corridor runs directly over the subterranean Metro tunnel. This alignment includes a 460-metre section positioned over the Teynampet and Nandanam Metro stations.
Because the operational Metro tunnel lies roughly 14 to 15 metres beneath the surface of Anna Salai, engineers have employed specialized construction methods to prevent any disruption to the underground rail network. To minimize risks to the existing infrastructure, the four-lane elevated corridor is being built using pre-fabricated steel components.
Work is ongoing as the highways department pushes to complete the remaining portions of the elevated structure before the end of November deadline.
