Ammonia leak death toll rises to 17 as worker dies at Chennai Stanley Hospital

A 21-year-old migrant worker from Odisha died at the Government Stanley Hospital in Chennai on Wednesday, bringing the total death toll from the June 21 ammonia gas leak at St Peter & Paul Seafood Export Private Limited in Tiruvallur to 17.
The deceased worker, identified as Anjana Juanga, failed to respond to medical treatment late on Tuesday night and was officially declared dead on Wednesday.
Juanga was one of the 83 people affected by the toxic gas leak at the Tiruvallur-based seafood export facility. The tragedy has heavily impacted migrant workers from several states, including Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand.
According to the police, the bodies of the 16 other individuals who died following the leak have already been sent back to their native states. These victims included 13 workers from Odisha, two from Assam, and one from Jharkhand.
The latest health status report, issued on Wednesday, indicated that 48 of the 83 affected individuals have recovered and have been discharged from medical facilities.
Currently, 19 people remain hospitalized and are undergoing treatment for the effects of the ammonia leak. Among those still under medical care, one patient is on ventilator support, 10 are receiving nasal oxygen, and eight are listed in stable condition.
