Adambakkam MRTS Station to Open Within a Month After Platform Gap Rectification

Adambakkam MRTS Station to Open Within a Month After Platform Gap Rectification

The Adambakkam MRTS station, located on the Velachery–St Thomas Mount extension line, is expected to open to the public within a month following the completion of platform safety repairs. Southern Railway officials confirmed that ongoing engineering work is currently underway to rectify a dangerous physical gap between train coaches and the station platform.

The station is a key component of the newly constructed 4.5-kilometre Velachery–St Thomas Mount MRTS extension, which was officially inaugurated on March 14. However, despite the formal launch of this railway line, passenger trains passing through the route have not been halting at the Adambakkam station.

The decision to bypass the station was made after the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety conducted an inspection of the newly built facility. During the safety audit, the commissioner detected a hazardous gap between the passenger train coaches and the platform edge, which was caused by a curve in the railway track layout at the station.

To address this safety concern, Southern Railway officials initiated rectification work to reduce the gap to safe limits. Railway authorities have now indicated that these corrective measures are progressing well and are expected to be finished in approximately one month, allowing trains to finally make scheduled stops.

The overall MRTS extension project has faced extreme delays, lagging by nearly two decades due to prolonged land acquisition challenges and various construction hurdles. Once the Adambakkam station becomes fully operational, the extended line will provide direct connectivity from Chennai Beach all the way to St Thomas Mount, significantly boosting transit options for commuters in the southern suburbs.

The opening of the station is expected to bring major relief to local commuters. It will directly serve residents living in Adambakkam, Nanganallur, and Madipakkam. Furthermore, the station will enhance multimodal transportation options in the area by linking commuters to an upcoming metro station situated nearby.
