Acclaimed Filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao Passes Away

Veteran filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao passed away this morning, marking the loss of an influential auteur whose genre-defining works across Indian cinema left an indelible mark on filmmakers and audiences alike.

Singeetham built a prolific body of work across Indian cinema, directing landmark Tamil titles including Raaja Parvai, Apoorva Sagodharargal, Magalir Mattum, Kaathala Kaathala, and Little John, alongside the celebrated dialogue-free pan-Indian feature Pushpaka Vimana. Among his diverse filmography, his 1990 comedy Michael Madana Kama Rajan stands out as one of the most celebrated and frequently cited productions in Tamil cinema.

The genesis of Michael Madana Kama Rajan began when the late writer-producer Panchu Arunachalam acquired the adaptation rights to a Pakistani film written by Kader Kashmiri, which followed quadruplet siblings separated at birth who reunite later in life. With Singeetham signed on to direct, Kamal Haasan developed the screenplay with assistance from Singeetham and writer Crazy Mohan, who also penned the film's dialogues. The story followed four separated brothers—Michael, Raju, Kameshwaran, and Madanagopal—who cross paths two decades after their birth.

The film also showcased technical milestones for its era, successfully compositing multiple versions of Kamal Haasan within single frames. Singeetham himself made an opening appearance in the film alongside children gathered around a bioscope, framed to composer Ilaiyaraaja's rendition of the introductory track Kadha Kelu.

The film continues to draw widespread appreciation across generations of cinema professionals. In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, actor Fahadh Faasil stated that the classic could never be remade, noting that he had revisited the feature and admired the narrative vision of using Kadha Kelu as an exposition. Actor Manikandan also recently highlighted the understated vocal range displayed across the quadruplets' contrasting accents, ranging from British-accented Tamil to Madras slang and Palakkad Tamil.
