Accessories brand The Postbox has officially opened its first physical experience store inside a 40-year-old independent house in T Nagar, Chennai. The launch marks the brand's transition from a digital-only retail model to a brick-and-mortar space, coming nearly a decade after the company established its base in Chennai and 10 years after its initial online launch.
The Postbox specialises in bags, wallets, and carrying goods, ranging from crossbody styles and duffels to backpacks and messengers. The products are crafted from leather, including a recent pebbled napa leather line, as well as a specialised water-resistant nylon canvas sourced directly from Germany.
Nikhil Joseph, chief executive officer and creative director of The Postbox, developed the new retail interior in collaboration with his wife, Vaishali Srinivasan of Studio 85:15. The first floor of the property houses the customer experience area, featuring dedicated corners for travel gear and leather goods alongside interactive displays where shoppers can test the water resistance of the nylon canvas using ink droppers. The ground floor of the building serves as the brand's primary warehouse.
According to Joseph, the decision to launch a physical space was driven by evolving customer behaviour. Over the years, buyers from Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Dubai regularly visited the brand's warehouse directly to inspect products. Joseph noted that their core audience, aged between 27 and 45, wanted to feel materials and verify functional design details before purchasing. Specific design elements featured in their collections include cobra locks on backpacks, detachable straps on laptop bags, dedicated internal slots for cables and lipsticks, and specialized sleeves for tracking tags.
Joseph explained that the T Nagar location will serve as a testing ground for potential larger-format spaces down the line. Beyond retail, the brand plans to utilise the space to host workshops, pop-ups, and community gatherings, while preparing to release upcoming designs such as new compact crossbody bags and lightweight leather handbags.
The Postbox experience store is located at 2/20, Singaram Street in T Nagar, with product prices starting from ₹1,599.
