840 Tonnes of Onions Arrive in Chennai from Nashik to Ease Shortage

A consignment of 840 tonnes of onions arrived at railway yards in Tondiarpet and Korukkupet in Chennai on Monday, intended to help mitigate supply shortages across Tamil Nadu.

The shipment was transported from Nashik in 21 freight wagons coordinated through the Central Warehousing Corporation. The freight train had departed Nashik on August 29 before reaching Chennai.

Priced at ₹35 per kilogram, the arriving consignment is designated for use by the Tamil Nadu government to stabilize the supply of the essential kitchen staple.

The arrival comes amid supply constraints flagged by traders at Chennai's Koyambedu market. Wholesale traders noted that local residents have been impacted by escalating prices and reduced availability of onions, which are critical for daily cooking.

Traders at Koyambedu had previously urged the government to intervene immediately to address the prevailing shortage and introduce measures to bring retail prices under control.
