73-Year-Old Man Arrested for Cheating Tambaram Resident with Fake Airport Job

Airport police have arrested a 73-year-old man for allegedly duping a resident of Tambaram of ₹71,000 by promising to secure a government job for his daughter at Chennai airport.

The accused has been identified as Sankaraiah, a native of Andhra Pradesh who had been staying in Alandur. He was arrested following a complaint lodged by Ramamoorthy, a resident of Tambaram.

According to police investigators, Ramamoorthy first got acquainted with Sankaraiah while traveling on a city bus. During their interaction, Ramamoorthy mentioned that his daughter, who is an engineering graduate, was searching for employment. Sankaraiah claimed that he had contacts through which he could secure government jobs and offered to arrange a placement for her in the Customs department at the airport.

Over the course of their dealings, Sankaraiah collected ₹71,000 from Ramamoorthy across various instalments. He claimed that the money had to be handed over to Customs officials to complete the official appointment process.

Ramamoorthy grew suspicious when Sankaraiah asked him to bring the remaining cash to the entrance of Chennai airport. Acting on his doubts, Ramamoorthy alerted the airport police about the matter.

Police officials laid a trap and nabbed Sankaraiah when he arrived at the airport entrance to collect the cash from the complainant. Investigators revealed that the accused had collected money from people using the false promise of arranging airport jobs through his contacts.

Following his arrest, Sankaraiah was remanded and sent to Puzhal prison.
