₹25 Crore Flood Protection Wall to Be Built Along Adyar River Near Jaffarkhanpet

The Water Resources Department (WRD) will construct a flood protection wall along the Adyar river near Jaffarkhanpet in Chennai at a cost of ₹25 crore as part of disaster management measures, Minister for Rural Development and Water Resources N. Anand announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Replying to the discussion on the Demands for Grants for the WRD, Mr. Anand stated that the project along the Adyar is part of 49 works worth ₹218.29 crore to construct flood protection walls across 19 districts.
Alongside the flood mitigation efforts in Chennai, the department will construct 27 check dams across 13 districts at a cost of ₹206.75 crore to conserve floodwater and harness groundwater. One check dam is slated for construction across the Amaravati river near Melapalayam village in Karur. Two bed dams costing ₹31.50 crore will also be built in districts such as Madurai to arrest riverbed erosion and facilitate groundwater recharge.
To improve existing water systems, the WRD will execute 96 works to repair, renovate, and restore waterbodies and irrigation channels across 30 districts, including Tiruchi, at an expenditure of ₹695.42 crore. In addition, 1,628 artificial groundwater recharge structures will be installed across 35 districts at an outlay of ₹28.9 crore.
Other measures announced include the restoration of dam infrastructure in 11 districts, including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Ramanathapuram, at a cost of ₹246.93 crore, repairs to seawalls in north Chennai, and an impact assessment report to evaluate the functioning of existing schemes.
Mr. Anand invited MLAs to take part in monthly meetings with WRD officials to address constituency issues, and noted that the department is monitoring storage increases ahead of a decision on water release from Mettur dam for delta irrigation.
