12 Juveniles Detained in Thiruvottiyur Over Murder of Class XII Student

Police in Thiruvottiyur have detained 12 juveniles in connection with the murder of a Class XII student who was assaulted by a group of schoolmates on Friday evening. The detained boys, aged 16 and 17, are scheduled to be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board following an inquiry.

The victim was identified as Dhanush, a student in the history stream at the Jai Gopal Garodia Government Higher Secondary School in Wimco Nagar. According to police, he was attacked by a gang of Class XI students from the same school and was left unconscious at the scene.

Dhanush was immediately rushed to the Government Stanley Hospital in a 108 ambulance. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead on arrival.

Investigators stated that the fatal clash was triggered by a dispute that broke out on August 13 on the school premises between Dhanush and a 17-year-old Class XI student. Following that initial altercation, the school headmaster intervened, summoned both students, and let them off with a warning.

However, tensions escalated the following evening when the Class XI student, accompanied by his friends, confronted Dhanush at a vacant plot located behind the Thiruvottiyur bus terminus. The group assaulted him during the confrontation. Police noted that some of the detained juveniles claimed they attempted to revive Dhanush after he suffered a seizure, before eventually leaving the location.

Following the incident, the victim's 45-year-old mother, Lakshmi, lodged a formal complaint with the local authorities. Based on her complaint, the Thiruvottiyur police registered a case and initiated an investigation, subsequently apprehending all 12 juveniles who study at the same institution.
