11 Juveniles Escape from Chengalpet Correctional Home, One Recaptured

Eleven juveniles lodged at the Government Correctional Facility for Boys and Girls in Chengalpet escaped on Friday night after overpowering the facility's warden, triggering a widespread police search across the district.

According to police, the juveniles pushed the home warden into a dormitory, locked the door from the outside, and fled the premises. The escaped inmates had been remanded to the facility in connection with various criminal cases, including theft, robbery, drug peddling, and murder.

Following the incident, Chengalpet Town police rushed to the correctional facility and initiated an investigation to identify all the absconding juveniles and track down their native locations. Chengalpet District Superintendent of Police Aiman Jamal visited the correctional home and inspected the premises.

Special search teams comprising personnel from the Chengalpet Town police, taluk police, and police stations in Palur and Padalam were formed to locate the missing juveniles. One of the 11 juveniles was subsequently traced and taken back into custody, while intensive efforts continue to apprehend the remaining 10.

The British-era correctional facility in Chengalpet houses juveniles from across Tamil Nadu. Officials stated that similar escape incidents had occurred at the facility in the past, with inmates assaulting staff members prior to fleeing.
